While looking through Jan's extensive photos archive, I came across some photos that may be of interest. The first two are from a full day Sunday walk led by John Emley in 2003, well before the rigmarole of Risk Assessments. If we came across something like this, it was just an interesting adventure! In the first picture is Julie Sims, in the second Joan Jervis.

The other two are of the Emanuelli family. For those that never met Hector Emanuelli, he was a legend in his own lifetime. Born in 1920 in the Rhondda to Italian immigrants, when the Second World War broke out, he was working in the family ice cream business in Hanley. In 1940 he was interned as a foreign national and detained in the Isle of Man.

Later he joined the Ramblers, and was a very active walk leader, and also regularly organised holidays to Italy for the Group. The pictures were taken on a walk he led on his 80th birthday, and show him with his son Dominic and granddaughter Lisa. On the same walk, we came across a fallen tree, and the whole group of walkers got together to move it off the path.

Hector continued walking for many years after that, and published his autobiography at the age of 90. He lived to see his 100th birthday but died just before his 101st.
