Bishop Auckland is a historic market town in County Durham, 12 miles southwest of Durham. Much of the town's early history surrounds the Bishops of Durham and the establishment of Auckland Castle's predecessor, a hunting lodge, which became the main residence of Durham Bishops. On previous walks we have made use of the Weardale Way, Low Barns Nature reserve and have visited Escomb Church, one of the oldest Anglo-Saxon churches in England and one of only four complete Anglo-Saxon churches remaining in England:well worth a visit! We should also be able to see the town Christmas lights.
